The Heart Pattern You’re Seeing Everywhere
The layered heart pattern. It’s everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. On sweaters on Instagram and Pinterest, as people’s iPhone wallpapers, and on designs from internet darling Wildflower Cases.
The pattern consists of layers of alternating shades of red and pink in a heart shape, creating an effect that catches the eye even while the design itself is pretty simple. It even resembles a Valentine’s Day card that you might have made with glue and some construction paper as a child. The pattern also frequently appears in brown and green, as shown below in photos found on Pinterest.
The design is perhaps most known for being on sweaters bought on the clothing site CIDER. The shop calls back to the design’s origins in The Powerpuff Girls’ intro song, “A mixture of sugar, spice and everything nice with a dash of Chemical X and we have the three ICONS known as the Powerpuff Girls! Doesn’t this sweater just bring back good childhood memories of the intro song and that AMAZING heart background? Chanel your inner Blossom as leader… or are you more of a Bubbles, who’s sensitive and lighthearted? Maybe you’re a little bit more on the sarcastic side and see yourself as Buttercup… But one thing’s for sure, no matter your preferred Powerpuff Girl, our sweater will keep you cozy and warm for a day of fighting crime (or procrastination 😜).”
It is worth noting that many people suspect that CIDER actually gets its stock from wholesale supplier AliExpress (commonly known as dropshipping), on which you can find the same designs and colors that they offer. Here are the designs that CIDER sells, coming in both long-sleeve and vest form:
A very similar sweater was also previously made by the brand LazyOaf, although it is no longer available. When CIDER and AliExpress started selling the design, however, was when it really took off online.
It is one of people’s favorite case designs that Wildflower offers, in both “Latte Love” and “Matcha Love.” Instead of tying the design back to the Y2K-esque aesthetic of the Powerpuff Girls, Wildflower draws inspiration from two of people’s favorite drinks right now, iced coffee and matcha. “How do you take your Matcha? Co-Founder, Devon Lee Carlson takes her matcha iced with 1/2 water 1/2 oat milk. Vibrant green hearts beat on this limited edition Matcha Love iPhone 11 case. Craving an iced matcha latte now?” states the product description.
The heart design is one of the many patterns and designs that have become trendy online recently. Think of the rise of cow print over the past year, which, interestingly enough, is now a common design on CIDER and on Wildflower Cases. Ditto with tie-dye.
While the rise of different patterns can often seem to happen randomly, there is usually some reason why. LazyOaf has many other pink and red heart designs, and other brands, such as ban.do and Urban Outfitters, have similar styles and colors. The revival of a pattern from a popular childhood show also shows how nostalgia can shape fashion trends. While not all of us may have watched The Powerpuff Girls growing up or remember the iconic pattern from the intro (I myself, having not seen the show, did not know where it came from at first), we can all feel empowered by a bright, uplifting heart design that reminds us to spread some love and kindness. So go get a heart sweater or phone case and embrace the spirit of the Powerpuff Girls!
